The following is required when performing a notarial act:
The individual making the statement or executing the signature must appear personally before the notary public.
The notary public must have personal knowledge or satisfactory evidence of the identity of the individual.
For Remote Online Notarizations (RON) the use of state approved, secured, audio- visual electronic communication technology can take the place of the signer appearing physically in person before the notary.
The statement being made, or a signature executed on a record now occurs remotely over the internet, with a document that is in electronic form.
The following identification is necessary to perform a notarial act in the state:
A passport, driver's license or government-issued nondriver identification card, which is current and unexpired.
Another form of government identification issued to an individual, which is current, contains the signature or a photograph of the individual, and is satisfactory to the notary public.
Please make sure that all forms of identification for the individual(s) signing are valid and unexpired prior to arriving to your appointment.
The notarization cannot take place unless all of the criteria that is required by the state of Pennsylvania has been met.
The notary is permitted to refuse service when:
The signer is not competent, nor has the capacity to sign.
The individual's signature is not knowingly and voluntarily made.
The individual's signature on the record or statement does not match the signature on the presented valid identification.
The physical appearance of the signer is substantially different than the photograph on a form of valid identification presented.
A notary public may not refuse notarial services on the basis of a customer’s race, color, National origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity (including pregnancy), disability, or marital status.
